“5-2-1-0 Healthy NH” is a statewide public education campaign to bring awareness to daily recommendations for nutrition and physical activity. Its message is simple and clear and represents some of the most important steps families can take to prevent childhood obesity.

Whether you are a childcare center or high school after-school program, the message is simple and easy to implement. There are 10 evidenced-based key strategies for success:

  1. Limit unhealthy choices for snacks and celebrations; provide healthy choices.
  2. Limit or eliminate sugary drinks; provide water.
  3. Prohibit the use of food as a reward.
  4. Provide opportunities to get physical activity every day.
  5. Limit recreational screen time.
  6. Participate in local, state and national initiatives that support healthy eating and active living.
  7. Engage community partners to help support healthy eating and active living.
  8. Partner with and educate families in adopting and maintaining a lifestyle that supports healthy eating and active living.
  9. Implement a staff wellness program that includes healthy eating and active living.
  10. Collaborate with Food and Nutrition Programs to offer healthy food and beverage options.

You may already be using many of these strategies, simply brand them with the 5210 message and logo.

Getting Started
Upon registering yourself as a 5210 Champion (please email Valerie Ferland at vferland@crhc.org to register), there are three primary tasks you will need to complete:

  1. Look through the toolkits and plan out your curriculum based on the ten strategies above.
  2. Inform families of the initiative through a Parent Letter (sample below). Their buy-in and reinforcement at home is critical.
  3. Administer the Pre-Program Survey to families before beginning. Set a date to check in after 4-6 months and administer the Post-Program Survey again to determine if your initiative is making a difference in the four key areas. Please send your results to Valerie Ferland at vferland@crhc.org. We are eager to share your success and track the progress in our region!
